The Ashland Volunteer Fire Company was formed in 1890 and is one of the oldest continually operating fire companies in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As Hanover County’s first fire company, it served the whole county until the formation of other departments many years later. The provision of fire suppression and rescue in Ashland remained all volunteer until 2016 when Hanover Fire-EMS staff began assisting the company on a temporary basis.

Today, the Ashland Volunteer Fire Company remains committed to protecting its neighbors in and around the Ashland community. Volunteer firefighters and EMT’s assist three paid firefighters from Hanover Fire-EMS with running an engine company, truck company, first response unit, and ambulance. The company provides training, purchases additional equipment, and continues to operate as an independent corporation with a Board of Directors elected by its membership.
